I dedicated this whole week to graphics which inevitably came with bug fixes
as well. Regardless, I'm quite happy with the results.
I discovered that I can use sprites bigger than the size of tiles in the tilemaps. This means that I now can create overlapping objects as seen in this video. However, now I have to redesign the obstacles function that is responsible for mapping the walkable and non-walkable tiles. After this, I can resume GFX design.
